Before departure

August 6 2015

Six days ago, when we crossed the border at Evzoni heading to the south, after ten clicks we spotted the first group. The lead man's face was swollen, he limbed strangely. Ten of them followed him. Mainly men. Few women and a kid. The other group took a break in the shade of the levanders. They passed a water bottle around. Then three young guys came. Small backpacks were their only belongings. Heads down, walked in the blazing heat, thirty kilometers from the border. The thermometer of the car showed 37 centigrade.

Tomorrow I take off too. The doubts are numerous, certainties are seldom. There is one for sure: stepping out from an air conditioned car, and when it comes uncomfortable, sitting back, it is impossible to understand this. And the lack of understanding derails everything. In this pandemonium, which surrounds the refugee crisis, is impossible to tell the real story from behind a computer screen and without leaving the very comfortable European fortress. The fortress which serves political charlatans, those who deeply involved in the hate business. Fear, hatred, ignorance, all come together and sells good in the market, perhaps produces extra political profit. Europe, the Union seems lame. Its politicians just trying to survive the end of the day, or another one, their eyes are sheepishly fixed on the end of their mandate, systems are collapsing, extremism is becoming the new cool. Challenging times. Challenging to remain human.

Tomorrow I take off heading to the "North" to reach Eldorado with the ones who have nothing to loose. If my karma helps I will tell the story of the El Camino of the Balkans. Om.

P.S. : Should I use the word "migrant" just once, please use your extended vocabulary sending me to hell.
