Idomeni

It was just casually left next tothe main road which runs along the greek macedonian border. I was bit a scared to look inside. It was a baby buggy. Empty. Only a nicely packed sleeping bag was hanging on it. I was three clicks form Idomeni, the greek village which became the northern epicenter of the refugee crisis in Greece. The village is the last stop of the international railway line crosses the border to Macedonia. A few hundered meters from the border there is a bridge which makes easier to cross the river. I walked 6 kilometers form the A1 highway junktion. A few hundred meters from the village the first group came out from the sunflower field. They were Afghans.

- Kabul, Herat, Mazari i Sharif - was the answer to my question. Young men, women, kids. Left Afghanistan a month ago. Crossed Iran, Turkey, arrived to the Greek island Lesvos and now they are here. From Saloniki they took a bus. In the village pub a Greek and a Georgian stood behind the counter. They had no problem at all with the refugees.

- They come and go . says the Greek. Every day twenty buses come from Thessalonik, loaded with refugees.

At the end of the village the main road reaches a railway crossing. Just before that a mobile fast food business offers hamburger, water and soda. The prices are reasonable and if someone needs there is a phone recharger plug. For free.

Across the rails there is the comeptition. Its offer icecream as well. Fifty meters from here is the border. Around three hundred people gathered and waiting for something. A Macedonian poiiceman tries to organize groups. given the circumstances the poeple are calm and follow the orders of the officer. For of them are here. One of them distributes a hand written note on small piece of papers. It seems that the Macedonian organize small groups, of twenty thirty people and then let them cross the border. A young officer spotted me making a video.

- You have to go back to the official broder crossing. You are illegal here.

- And how is not?

- Well...

At this point I change to Serbian, and the bad chemistry disappears.

- What if... perhaps... that you look the other way? - I ask.

He nods and leaves our group. I donˋt know whether that was a yes or no. I go figure it out.
